Description
Solitary Islands Marine Park is a protected marine park located in New South Wales, Australia.
It stretches across 75 km of the northern coast of New South Wales and covers an area of approximately 72,000 hectares of coastal estuaries and lakes. The park encompasses a diverse range of ecosystems, including intertidal and subtidal reefs, soft sediments, beaches, seagrass beds, mangroves, saltmarsh, and open waters. The Yuragir National Park borders the northern section of the marine park, containing several lakes and lagoons.
The marine park is home to a wide range of flora and fauna. The coastal areas adjoining the park are enriched with high species richness and endemism, and the waters surrounding Solitary Islands are strongly influenced by the East Australian Current. The park represents the overlap of tropical and temperate faunas, making it an important habitat for many species. Various vegetation types can be found in the park, including mangroves, dune communities, and exposed high-dune sand systems. Threatened plant species are also present in the region.
