Description
Starlights Trail is a popular hike among bushwalkers and nature enthusiasts.
It is part of the larger trail network between Mittagong and Katoomba, covering a vast expanse of untouched wilderness. The trail offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding cliffs and the Nattai River, with highlights including the Ahearn lookout and the towering Russell's needle sandstone spur. Throughout the hike, you'll encounter various eucalyptus trees, pockets of blue-leaved stringybark forest, and the majestic stands of Nattai Sandstone River peppermint forest. There are also waterfalls, natural rock formations, and native wildlife to enjoy along the way.
During the summer months, the weather in the Nattai National Park can be extreme, with high temperatures and a high risk of bushfires. It's recommended to avoid the hike during this period. It's also important to pack suitable clothing for all weather types, comfortable walking shoes, and sufficient water and emergency supplies, as the weather can change quickly.
To get to Starlights Trail Wattle Ridge, head to the Nattai National Park. The hike starts from the Wattle Ridge camping area, which is approximately 130km from Sydney. You can reach the camping area by taking a 4WD vehicle, as the road up the mountain can be bumpy. Alternatively, you can walk from the car park to the Wattle Ridge camping area, which takes approximately 2-3 hours.
