Description
Susan Hood uses the beauty and diversity of this country and it's native wildlife as the inspiration for her work.
I was born with a fascination for all the creatures living in the world and a passion for seeking them out, trying to capture a moment in time of their lives through my paintings. My childhood was surrounded with domestic birds such as Budgerigars, Parrots, Chickens, Ducks and Pigeons so it’s no wonder that I still have a penchant for painting my feathered friends.
I love nothing more than camping in wild remote places throughout Australia researching the character, habits and habitats of my subjects as I have always had to have had some interaction with those that I choose to paint. I no longer keep birds as pets but love the satisfaction of raising orphans or rehabilitating injured wildlife to be released back into the wild.
Although I studied Art and Design I am basically a self-taught Artist, with an eye for detail, and have painted in most mediums over the years but have returned to Oils to achieve the look that I want in my work. I work from initial observation, sketches and reference photos in their natural habitats and formulate my composition loosely which often evolves and changes as the painting progresses, some ending up far removed from the original concept.
