Tamar River

Tourist attractions

Description

The Tamar River is a stunning 70-kilometre estuary located in northern Tasmania, Australia.

It is a brackish and tidal estuary along its length, despite being named after a river. The Tamar River flows north from Launceston to its mouth at Low Head, and into the Bass Strait via Port Dalrymple. It has several minor tributaries, including the Supply River, and is divided by the Tamar Island. The river requires frequent dredging due to its tendency to silt up easily. The success of a scheme to partially dam the river and disrupt water flow is still debated. The river is still used for shipping and has light and heavy industries at George Town.

The Tamar River was named after the River Tamar in South West England by Colonel William Paterson in December 1804. The last 10 kilometers of the Tamar River estuary are a great spot for fishing, with Australian Salmon, Flathead, King George Whiting, and Squid being commonly found. There are amenities available for picnics and boat ramps at Clarence Point, Kelso, and Low Head. The river offers various activities, including fishing, sunset cruises, and enjoying the view.
