Tasman Bridge

The Tasman Bridge is a well-known landmark in Hobart, Tasmania, connecting the eastern and western shores of the city.

It is an important link for commuters and visitors traveling from the city center to the eastern shore. The bridge has become one of Hobart's most recognizable landmarks and plays a crucial role in the city's growing population.

The idea of constructing a new and larger bridge began in the 1950s due to the development of the eastern shore. The old Hobart Bridge was unable to handle the increasing traffic volume and caused disruptions to shipping traffic. Construction of the Tasman Bridge began in 1960 and was completed in 1965. It was officially opened by Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester.

On January 5, 1975, the bridge suffered a disaster when it was struck by the bulk ore carrier Lake Illawarra. This caused significant damage to the bridge, resulting in the collapse of two pylons and three sections of concrete decking. The accident led to the death of seven crew members and five motorists. The bridge was repaired and reconstructed, with safety measures implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future.

In 2019, the Tasman Bridge underwent an LED lighting upgrade. The Hobart City Council commissioned Decrolux to replace the old fluorescent lighting with modern LED lighting. The project was completed in 2021 and has allowed for remote programmability of the lights. The LED lighting has been used to celebrate various events and support important causes.

The Tasman Bridge also provides pedestrian footways on both sides, offering breathtaking views of the Derwent River, Hobart CBD, and the surrounding mountains. While there is no dedicated lane for bicycles, steps to the footway were replaced with ramps in 201
