Description
Tennyson Dunes is a unique coastal conservation reserve located in Tennyson, South Australia, just 12 kilometers from Adelaide's CBD.
It is a 22-hectare area that is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, including rare and regionally significant plant species, bird life, reptiles, and invertebrates.
The best way to explore the reserve is by taking a walk along the one-kilometer Tennyson Dunes Discovery Trail, which is partly a sandy trail winding its way through the ancient dune system and partly a beach walk. While walking the trail, visitors can take a free self-guided tour using their smartphone as a guide and explore the botanical wonders of the reserve.
Tennyson Dunes is a botanical paradise! The reserve boasts 52 plant species, including 16 with conservation significance. Adelaide's fourth botanic garden is how many describe it due to its coastal specialist plant species, which have adapted to thrive under the harsh conditions of this tough and blustery landscape.
If you visit in the warmer months, from October to April, you might be lucky enough to spot reptiles. They are usually more active in the morning and afternoon as they warm themselves along the trail, on fence posts, and on top of bushes.
The warmer months from October to April are the best time to visit the reserve, but please check if it is not closed due to extreme fire dangers. Visitors should also note that there is no shade on the walking trail, so it is essential to wear a hat, sunscreen, and bring drinking water.
Visitors can take public transportation or drive to Tennyson Dunes. The reserve is located just opposite West Lakes and has a car park at the end
