The Beach

Events Feb 7 - Apr 20

1 Finnerty St, Fremantle, WA 6160

Description

Ballardong artist Dianne Jones brings the witty and humorous style of her photographic works to a new suite of images that respond to the site and history of Manjaree (Bathers Beach) in Walyalup.

Dianne made the photographic series that her seminal works Sunbaker and Beach Scene are drawn from more than 20 years ago. Waving and smiling at the camera, Dianne inserted her own image and figure into these iconic Australian photographic works. Her presence on the beach ‘queered’ these sites and firmly placed contemporary Indigenous identities into Australian narratives and art history.

Alongside this work at beach sites around WA, Dianne presents new images responding to Manjaree, the historically important site of kinship and meeting in Noongar culture. These works seen together complicate Australian beach narratives and address the colonial history of Walyalup and the historical figure of Captain Fremantle.
