Origins and Re-establishment Originally opened in late 2005 out of a once covered carpark in Latimer Square, Christchurch City, the inner city Bicycle Thief managed to survive the 2011 Canterbury earthquakes with minor damage. However, due to compulsory acquisition, the restaurant was forced to close. In early 2016, The Bicycle Thief was re-established, but this time in a bucolic Canterbury countryside between Halswell and Tai Tapu. The new venue has a different look to the original, but still retains the warm and charming atmosphere that was prevalent in the original one.

When to Visit and How to Get There The Bicycle Thief is open for lunch and dinner from Tuesday to Sunday, starting at 11.30 am and finishing late. The kitchen closes at 2.30 pm and reopens at 5 pm for dinner. It's a great place for anyone who wants to take a break from the city and experience a little country charm. To get to The Bicycle Thief follow the Christchurch– Akaroa Highway towards Tai Tapu, then travel along Old Tai Tapu Road. It's only a short drive away from the city, and there is plenty of parking available on-site.
