Description
The Gordon River is a major perennial river located in Tasmania, Australia. Stretching 172 kilometres (107 mi), it flows from east to west before entering Macquarie Harbour at Wrights Bay in the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.
The river begins below Mount Hobhouse in the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park and is joined by 25 tributaries. Passing through the Gordon Splits, it flows north by west and then due north and finally due west as it reaches its mouth and empties into Macquarie Harbour at Wrights Bay.
The lower part of the Gordon River is part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area and is home to a cold-climate rainforest and rare trees. The water in the river is fresh and drinkable, yet has the color of weak tea due to the absorption of tannin from button grass growing in the catchment area. The river was at the center of a major political and environmental issue in the 1980s, with dam proposals being changed as a result of significant opposition and public opinion.
Boat trips to the lower Gordon River from Macquarie Harbour are popular with tourists in Strahan. There are many reliable and experienced tour operators that offer a variety of cruising options.
