The Mezz

The revitalised laneway is located in the heart of Mt Hawthorn, tucked inside The Mezz Shopping Centre off of Scarborough Beach Road. Previously an internal, one-way, vehicle thoroughfare, the laneway has now been fully pedestrianised, providing a new external retail space to the shopping centre. The laneway has been divided into three spaces relating to and engaging with the community; a space for adults, a space for children, and family space or picnic area to be enjoyed by all. The dining/lounge space is defined by an informal stage to the west and an outdoor fireplace to the east providing patrons an opportunity to engage in a more relaxed setting. A playground has been positioned in the middle of the laneway to provide amenity for children and their parents, whilst to the East; a grassed lawn area provides a quiet contrast to enjoy a picnic or to just quietly relax.

Landscape was an integral component and plays a vital role within this redevelopment. Edible plants, herbs and fruits have been carefully positioned throughout the laneway to further visually define the three rooms. To enhance the sense of community, visitors are allowed to pick herbs, vegetables and fruit when visiting the centre. The laneway now provides a tranquil contrast to the traditional sense of car parks and enclosed malls typically associated with the suburban shopping centre.
