Description

Two Peoples Bay Nature Reserve is a protected area managed by the Department of Parks and Wildlife located 35 kilometres (22 mi) east of Albany, Western Australia.

It is easily accessible by 2WD vehicles, providing visitors with unspoilt coastal scenery and a variety of outdoor activities.

Two Peoples Bay received its name from an event that took place in 1803 when an American whaling ship anchored in the area at the same time as a French vessel that was exploring the coastline east of Albany. Whaling activities continued in the bay during the middle of the 19th century. In the 1840s, John Gilbert, a naturalist, surveyed the area and gave his name to the rare Gilbert's potoroo. The area was declared a nature reserve in 1967 specifically to protect the threatened noisy scrub-bird and its habitat. The nature reserve spans a total area of 4,744.7 hectares (11,724 acres) and is divided into three areas: the main section of 4,510 hectares (11,144 acres), a smaller section of 89 hectares (220 acres) about 2 kilometres (1 mi) north of the main area, and four islands ranging in size from 3 ha (7.4 acres) to 28 ha (69 acres).
