Description

Wairuna is located in Girringun National Park, which is part of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area.

It is a significant attraction for visitors due to its World Heritage Site status. The park was initially named Lumholtz National Park in 1994 but was renamed Girringun National Park in 2003. It was expanded in 2010, adding an additional area of 2,810 hectares.

The ecosystem in Wairuna consists mainly of wet sclerophyll forests, with some rainforest areas along the eastern slopes and hilltops. The landscape is scattered with granite debris from an ancient volcanic eruption. The Seaview, George, and Cardwell Ranges dominate the skyline, and the Wallaman Falls, spanning 268 meters, is a prominent natural landmark. The national park is also part of the Wooroonooran Important Bird Area, providing sanctuary to many bird species endemic to Queensland.

Access to Wairuna is provided by the Dalrymple Gap track and Wallaman Falls track, which allow vehicle access into the forest. Adventurous hikers can explore the remote and rugged terrain, but it is recommended that only experienced bushwalkers undertake extended hikes.

Wairuna in Girringun National Park offers a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts, hikers, and nature lovers. Visitors can enjoy scenic granite rock formations, woodlands, and impressive waterfalls. Plan a visit to Wairuna and experience the thrill of exploring the Queensland Wet Tropics.
