Welcome to Wangara
Wangara is one of Perth's busiest industrial areas and is roughly 10 kilometres from Joondalup, Perth's largest satellite city north of the Swan River.
It has a wide range of warehouses and industrial services, and some commercial services such as new and used car dealerships, mechanics, industrial work wear, excavation services and landscaping products.
The suburb is bounded by Wanneroo Road to the west – which features a large yellow boomerang - Ocean Reef Road to the north/east and Gnangara Road to the south.
Inside my neighbourhood
Wangara is part of the City of Wanneroo local government area and sits within the City’s Established Industrial Place Management Area.
Because it’s mainly an industrial area, very few people live in Wangara. However, the area has many facilities attracting hundreds of nearby residents, including churches, dance studios, martial arts and welfare services.
The combined Madeley, Wangara and Woodvale suburbs have a population of over 7,500 people, which is estimated to remain the same over the next 20 years. Since 1980, the weekend Wanneroo Markets in Prindiville Drive have consistently offered award-winning locally grown produce.
Origin of name and history
Wangara was named in 1980 by combining the names of the two main roads adjoining it - Wanneroo and Gnangara.
The area was mainly bushland, market gardens, plant nurseries and other hobby type farms before it became an industrial hub north of Perth. It now houses a wide range of businesses and services.
The iconic Wangara Boomerang on Wanneroo Road acknowledges the Wangara Trade Centre and Aboriginal community’s role in the local community.
The local landmark was erected on 25 July 1983 and members of the Noongar community performed at the official opening ceremony. It is believed to have been the largest boomerang in the world at the time and was entered for inclusion in the Guinness World Book of Records. Luisini Park where the boomerang is located was named because the industrial area was formerly part of the vineyard of that name.
