Wangaratta's Significant Trees Walks is a great way to appreciate the town's natural beauty.
The walks are perfect for those interested in trees, historical landmarks, or looking for a relaxing stroll. There are three separate walks to choose from, each taking around 30 minutes to complete.
The Business Precinct Walk offers visitors a chance to see the town's most significant trees. It starts at the Cathedral Precinct, where visitors can observe a giant Bunya Pine. Next, visitors can walk to King George Gardens, home to magnificent London Plane Trees. The walk continues towards the Ovens River, where the Major Mitchell Tree, one of Wangaratta's most important trees, can be seen. This walk also offers a chance to take a closer look at some lovely River Red Gums.
The Historic Railway Precinct Walk takes visitors through Wangaratta's railway precinct. It starts at the Wangaratta Performing Arts Centre and visitors can view flowering gums and Peppercorn trees planted when tracks were first laid. The walk also includes viewing the mature Norfolk Pine in front of the North Eastern Hotel and crossing the railway bridge to walk back along Cusack Street, past Bishop's Lodge with its historic garden. The Canary Island Palm was planted by the first Anglican Bishop early in the 20th Century.
The Residential Precinct Walk begins at the Bike Hub and offers visitors a chance to explore a variety of significant trees. The walk takes visitors along Wangaratta's main entry and exit road and leads through one of the town's more established neighborhoods. A short walk through Merriwa Park takes visitors back to the starting point.
