Description
Warrandyte State Park is a stunning destination located in Warrandyte, just 24 km east of Melbourne, Victoria.
Situated on the banks of the Yarra River and surroundings, this state park comprises of 586 hectares of remnant bushland in various locations throughout Warrandyte and Wonga Park around Pound Bend, Fourth Hill, Black Flat, Yarra Brae, and Mount Lofty. This park hosts significant geographical, environmental, archaeological, and historical sites, making it an absolute must-visit.
The land occupied by the park was initially owned by the Wurundjeri Nation, the Indigenous people of the Melbourne region. Gold was later discovered in Andersons Creek in July 1851, leading to the first gold licenses being issued in Victoria. The Warrandyte region became a popular gold-mining spot for miners, employing around 250 miners at the turn of the century. Much of the area was mined heavily between the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The Warrandyte State Park comprises several detached areas of land adjoining the Yarra River from Pound Bend in the west to Wonga Park through the Warrandyte Gorge to Mount Lofty in the east. Other areas of land are situated throughout the hills immediately south of Warrandyte. The park consists of various areas, including Pound Bend, Yarra Brae, Fourth Hill, Whipstick Gully, The Common, Stane Brae, Norman Reserve, Timber Reserve, Black Flat, Jumping Creek, and Mount Lofty. The park is around 25 km upstream from the mouth of the Yarra River.
