Description

Werakata National Park is a 3,337-hectare (8,250-acre) national park located in the Lower Hunter region of New South Wales, Australia.

It consists of three sections near Abermain, Kearsley, and Kitchener/Abernethy. Originally known as the Lower Hunter National Park, it was established in 1999 and later expanded in 2003. The park is home to several threatened species and features the Spotted Gum-Ironbark vegetation communities.

The park offers an abundance of trails for hiking and cycling, including the picturesque Tomalpin Hill. Astills Picnic Area provides a serene spot to relax and unwind. Other features include the Kurri Sand Swamp Woodland and an old Forestry Hut off Old Maitland Road.

Werakata State Conservation Area, located south of the national park, is also worth visiting. It offers birdwatching opportunities and various walking tracks, including the popular Deadmans Trail.
