Description
Located within the Fitzgerald River National Park, West Mount Barren and its surrounding Barren Range offer sweeping views of the South Coast of Western Australia.
The 372-metre high peak is situated between Bremer Bay and Hopetoun and can be accessed via an unsealed road suitable for 2WD vehicles that runs off Pabelup Drive. A carpark and plaque marks the beginning of an easy two-hour return walk to the summit. Visitors are advised to remain on the path to avoid spreading dieback, which threatens the native plants in the area. From the top, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the national park and coastline beyond.
The Barren Range is not continuous and is made up of three distinct peaks that are connected by coastal plain. The nearby Mount Bland is the closest mountain feature, located approximately 5 km northeast from West Mount Barren. Mid Mount Barren sits roughly 20 km northeast and East Mount Barren is situated approximately 50 km northeast from West Mount Barren. There are also several other peaks in the area, including Woolbernup Hill, Thumb Peak, Mt Drummond and Mt Maxwell.
West Mount Barren and the Barren Range belong to the Albany-Fraser Orogen and Yilgarn Craton basement rocks of the Ravensthorpe region. The area is largely composed of granite, gneiss, quartzite, phyllite, dolomite, and conglomerate rock formations. The Barren Ranges consist of metasediments that have been faulted, folded, and tilted. These rock beds were once layers of sand deposited on the sea floor before being compressed, heated, and uplifted by movements of the Earth's crust.
