Description
Whitehaven Beach, located on Whitsunday Island in Australia, was discovered in 1879 by Staff Commander EP Bedwell and named after the English town of the same name.
The beach is known for its strikingly white sands made up of 98% pure silica, which is not native to the area. The sand does not retain heat, making it comfortable to walk on even on hot days.
Whitehaven Beach has received recognition for its cleanliness and eco-friendliness. It was named Queensland's Cleanest Beach in 2008 and the top eco-friendly beach in the world in 2010. The beach's crystal-clear turquoise waters and sparkling sands attract visitors from all over. Tourists and locals come to swim, sunbathe, and enjoy the barbecue and camping facilities. The beach also hosts the Whitehaven Beach Ocean Swim, an open swimming competition held annually since 2009.
In 2018, the government announced a $3.9 million investment to construct a new walking track and upgrade camping facilities on the island, aimed at enhancing the visitor experience. The track will connect Whitehaven Beach to Tongue Point. The beach is easily accessible from Airlie Beach, Hamilton Island, or by seaplane or helicopter. It is located opposite Stockyard Beach on Haslewood Island. Visitors planning to stay overnight at the National Parks campsite should reserve facilities in advance. Smoking is prohibited on the beach, and dogs are not allowed.
