Description
Welcome to Witjira National Park! Witjira National Park was established on 21st November 1985 to protect the unique array of artesian springs that form the nationally significant Dalhousie Mound Springs complex.
The area gained formal joint management arrangements in 2007, between its traditional owners and the Government of South Australia, the first in the State.
Covering an area of 7,726.73 square kilometres (2,983.31 sq mi), Witjira National Park is situated about 987 kilometres (613 miles) north of the state capital of Adelaide. The national park is classified as an IUCN Category VI protected area, meaning that it is specifically intended for the protection of conservation of ecosystems, with a low level of human-use.
The national park is home to the historic Dalhousie Homestead Ruins, listed on the South Australian Heritage Register. These ruins are the remnants of the former Dalhousie Station, and they provide an interesting look into the history of the area.
Celebrating the unique geological and natural heritage significance of the land, the South Australian Government passed a new regulation on 26th November 2021 to prohibit mining in the Dalhousie Springs National Heritage Area of Witjira National Park. This new regulation aims to permanently protect the park’s heritage values for the future.
Witjira National Park is a must-visit destination for nature lovers and history buffs alike. Don't forget to pack appropriately for the outback’s climate and explore this unique and significant environment.
