Description
The Wonambi Fossil Centre Naracoorte, located in South Australia, offers visitors a unique travel and educational experience that provides a glimpse into a world from more than 500,000 years ago.
The centre showcases how the Naracoorte Caves, pitfall traps, dens, and roosts, lead to a vast accumulation of skeletal remains of reptiles, birds, and mammals. Visitors can expect to see exhibitions that recreate a time when megafauna roamed the landscape and the local animal community was more diverse than today.
Visitors to the Wonambi Fossil Centre have the opportunity to explore the exhibitions that showcase the fossils and bones found in the Naracoorte Caves. The Palaeontologists who have been studying the fossils and bones in the caves for over 40 years have created well-curated and informative displays. The Victoria Fossil Cave, recognized by UNESCO for its outstanding scientific value, offers guided tours for visitors. The one-hour guided tour takes visitors through magnificent speleothem chambers while the guide outlines the accumulation of bones in the caves and excavation techniques. For those who prefer exploring on their own, the Stick-Tomato Cave, with an easy walk and two chambers to explore, offers a self-guided tour option.
The Wonambi Fossil Centre opens its doors to visitors from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm every day of the week, making it easy to fit into any travel itinerary. The best time to visit is during the opening hours of the Centre.
