Inside my neighbourhood
Woodvale was primarily rural until the late 1970s. The combined Madeley, Wangara and Woodvale suburbs have a population of over 8,000 people, which is estimated to remain the same over the next 20 years.
The area boasts some of the City’s historical landmarks including Perry’s Paddock, Cockman house and Duffy house. Within the lush Yellagonga Regional Park, you will find a variety of trails and walking paths, containing the Beenyup Swamp Boardwalk
Origin of name and history
Woodvale is home to Paul Conti Wines, which now houses a modern winery and restaurant, was the original homestead of Carmelo (also known as Charlie) and Rosa Conti who, in 1927, immigrated to Australia from a small town in their homeland of Sicily.
This property was once the hub of a rural self-sufficient lifestyle. Based on black, fertile swampy soils, the conditions were ideal for growing vegetables, planting an orchard and establishing grape vines. The area was cleared between 1963 and 1968, for grazing purposes, and then developed for housing in the early 1970's.
Woodvale derives its name from the area surging with high quality timber. The suburb name was approved on 3 December 1974.
Residential development began in 1979 and was completed by 1995 with the release of the Woodvale Waters housing estate.
Prior to the inception of the City of Joondalup in 1998, the entire suburb of Woodvale was part of the City of Wanneroo.
