East Pilbara art galleries and exhibitions

The Shire of East Pilbara in Western Australia is home to the East Pilbara Arts Centre (EPAC), which showcases the works of Martumili Artists, a group of Indigenous artists from the region. Located in Newman, EPAC is a contemporary, flexible gallery and working space that provides Martumili Artists with a purpose-built creative environment for education, public exhibitions, and the sale of their work. Established by Martu people living in seven remote East Pilbara communities, Martumili Artists draws on strong influences from Aboriginal art history. The artists and their families are the traditional custodians of vast stretches of the Great Sandy, Little Sandy, and Gibson Deserts, as well as the Karlamilyi (Rudall River) area.

The East Pilbara Arts Centre houses a gallery, art storage space, an artists' studio, a commercial kitchen, and a separate kitchenette. It is an important cultural facility for the small community of Newman and has received numerous accolades for its design and significance. Visitors can explore the gallery and even observe local artists at work in a separate attached area. The center is open from Monday to Friday, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, and on Saturdays from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.
