Mount Magnet Aboriginal art

The Shire of Mount Magnet in Western Australia is home to the Wirnda Barna Art Centre, which supports and represents Aboriginal artists from Badimia and Wajarri Country based in Mount Magnet and surrounding areas. In addition to the art center, the region is known for its significant Aboriginal rock art sites, such as Walga Rock and The Granites. Wirnda Barna Art Centre, located in Mount Magnet, provides a creative environment for Aboriginal artists to work together, connect with their language and culture, and generate income through the sale of their visual art. The center is funded by the Department of Communications and the Arts: Indigenous Visual Arts Industry Support Grant.

Walga Rock, home to the largest gallery of Aboriginal rock paintings in Western Australia, features a large cave with various paintings, including depictions of ships that are said to have visited the area. The Granites, situated just 9 km from the historic town of Mount Magnet, is another significant Aboriginal rock art site in the region. In addition to these attractions, the Shire of Mount Magnet is famous for its spectacular wildflower season in Spring and important cultural sites, such as the Wilgie Mia Aboriginal Ochre Mine, Australia's largest ochre mine. Mount Augustus, known as Burringurrah by the local Wadjari Aboriginal people, is another notable site with ancient Aboriginal carvings.
