Weipa, located in Queensland, is home to the Western Cape Cultural Centre - Achimbun, a unique attraction that showcases the history and culture of the region. The centre plays an important role in preserving traditional language and culture from the area through its informative displays and artwork. Visitors can explore the Cultural Centre free of charge from 9 am to 4 pm, Monday to Friday, between March and November. The centre is not only a repository of local history and culture but also a community asset, with plans for a major refurbishment to develop it into a cultural precinct.
This development will include an Aboriginal Arts Centre, a Cultural Park with a stage for cultural events, and a food outlet and retail store. Throughout the Cultural Precinct, bush food and bush medicines will be planted, further enhancing the visitor experience. At the Cultural Centre, coffee, light refreshments, and original artworks created by Traditional Owners can be purchased. The Centre is a valuable resource for both locals and visitors, offering a glimpse into the rich history and culture of the region.
