The Burdekin region in Queensland features two main beaches offering distinct experiences. Patrolled by the Ayr Surf Life Saving Club, this beach is ideal for relaxation and leisurely exploration. During low tide, Alva Beach transforms into a captivating environment filled with soldier crabs, shells, and diverse bird species. The presence of outer sand bars forms inshore lagoon areas popular among kitesurfers and paddleboarders. Fishing enthusiasts are drawn to Alva Beach for its opportunities to reel in decent catches.
Wunjunga Beach, situated in Upstart Bay, is part of a cluster of low-energy beaches bordering the southern channel of the Burdekin River, Groper Creek, and Molongle Creek. The western shore of Upstart Bay features four beaches, with Cape Upstart hosting a variety of bird species, including black swans, lorikeets, jabirus, and brolgas. Visitors can engage in bush camping in the vicinity. Besides these main beaches, the Burdekin region showcases other stunning coastal areas, such as the women's area at Worrungu Bay, the stone formations near Mine Island, and numerous sand dune middens in Cape Upstart.
