The Snowy Monaro Region in New South Wales is home to the Snowy Hydro Discovery Centre, located in Cooma, the capital of the Snowy Mountains. This centre offers a fascinating insight into the Snowy Mountains and the mighty Snowy Scheme, with a state-of-the-art immersive theatre that takes visitors on a virtual tour. At the Discovery Centre, you can learn about how Snowy Hydro operates today and get information on the pumped-hydro expansion project, Snowy 2.0. The centre also shares stories from former workers and the current workforce about life on the Snowy.
After exploring the exhibits, you can relax and enjoy refreshments at the Discovery Cafe, which offers a range of homemade pies, sausage rolls, sandwiches, cakes, and other sweet treats. The Discovery Shop provides a variety of books, clothing, STEM, and science-based products for purchase. The Snowy Hydro Discovery Centre is easily accessible, located just over an hour's drive south of Canberra and less than an hour's drive from Jindabyne. There is plenty of free car parking, additional caravan and trailer parking, and a Chargefox Electric Vehicle charging station on site. If you prefer to travel by plane, the Snowy Mountains Airport is located 16km south-west of Cooma on the Kosciuszko Road.
Another attraction in the Snowy Monaro Region is the Snowy Region Visitor Centre in Jindabyne. This visitor centre is a great starting point for visitors heading into Kosciuszko National Park, providing information, brochures, maps, and park entry passes. The centre also offers a range of services and facilities, including accommodation advice, trip intention forms, and Personal Locator Beacon hire.
