Adelaide, South Australia, is home to the historic Port Adelaide Lighthouse, located on the North Parade of Port Adelaide with a rich history dating back to its first lighting in 1869. Initially positioned at the entrance to the Port River near Outer Harbor, the lighthouse was moved to the Neptune Islands in 1901 before being relocated to its present site in 1986. Since 1980, the Port Adelaide Lighthouse has been listed on the South Australian Heritage Register.
Featuring a 2nd-order Chance Brothers Fresnel lens and standing at a height of 25 meters (82 feet), the lighthouse is constructed with a cast-iron skeletal tower, hexagonal tower and balcony, lantern, and central cylinder from the keeper's house. Painted in red for the tower and keeper's house and white for the balcony and lantern, the lighthouse presents a visually striking appearance.
Operated by the South Australian Maritime Museum, the Port Adelaide Lighthouse welcomes visitors on weekdays from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm and weekends from 10:30 am to 4:00 pm. Admission fees are $1 for adults and 50 cents for children, with free entry available with South Australian Maritime Museum General Admission. The lighthouse's observation deck offers stunning views of the Port Adelaide area.
Beyond its historical and architectural significance, the Port Adelaide Lighthouse serves a practical purpose in guiding vessels into the port. A visit to this iconic lighthouse is highly recommended for history enthusiasts and photographers exploring Adelaide.
