Fraser Coast Regional medical museums

The Fraser Coast Region in Queensland is home to several medical and healthcare museums that offer a fascinating insight into the history of medicine and healthcare in Australia. Two notable museums in the area are the Maryborough Military and Colonial Museum and the Fraser Coast Discovery Sphere. The Maryborough Military and Colonial Museum, located in the former School of Arts building, showcases a vast collection of military memorabilia and over 60,000 photographs dating back to the 1860s. The museum includes a dedicated hospital room display, which highlights the medical instruments and equipment used during the colonial period. A large collection of lighthouse fragments and a photographic display can be found at the Roker Pier Store beside the museum.

The Fraser Coast Discovery Sphere, also known as the Maritime Museum, is situated near the Mary River in Maryborough, just a two-hour drive north of Brisbane. The museum is dedicated to maritime history and the local, national, and international maritime stories and exhibits. Although not exclusively focused on medical and healthcare history, the museum offers a broader understanding of the region's social, cultural, and economic history. The Maryborough Military and Colonial Museum and the Fraser Coast Discovery Sphere provide insight into the region's past and showcase the medical practices and instruments used during the colonial era and beyond.
