Colac Otway Shire scenic lookouts

The Colac region in Victoria is home to the Red Rock Scenic Lookout, offering stunning views of the volcanic landscape and Lake Corangamite. Located 12 km from Colac, it is one of Australia's youngest volcanoes, part of the third-largest volcanic plain globally and estimated to be 8,000 years old. The area features maars, scoria cones, and small lava flows within the volcanic complex.

Visitors at the lookout can enjoy a 360-degree view, taking in the volcanic plain's topography and the 25,000-hectare Lake Corangamite, known for hosting migratory water birds in its three times saltier than seawater environment. On clear days, the volcanic peaks of South West Victoria can be glimpsed to the west.

Beyond the Red Rock Scenic Lookout, the Colac region boasts other attractions like the Colac Botanical Gardens, Lake Colac foreshore, and the Old Beechy Rail Trail, a 50 km walking and cycling trail from Colac to Ferguson. The town of Colac also offers a vibrant arts precinct and a rich history, featuring buildings of historical significance like the post office (1876), shire hall (1879), and the former Regent Theatre (1925).
