Boggo Road Gaol, also known as H.M. Prison Brisbane, served as Queensland's primary correctional facility from the 1880s until the 1980s. Situated in Dutton Park, an inner southern suburb of Brisbane, this prison is a well-preserved example of 19th-century penological practices. Initially used for short-term sentences and pre-trial detention, the prison's modern-era section was demolished post-closure, leaving the heritage-listed 1905 women's prison section. In December 2012, this remaining part of Boggo Road Gaol was reopened to the public as a historical tourist site, offering insights into its grim past.
In addition to Boggo Road Gaol, Brisbane is also home to the Brisbane Correctional Centre, previously named the Sir David Longland Correctional Centre. Established in Wacol, near Brisbane, this high-security prison has a capacity of 558 inmates and has been operational since 1988.
