The Sunshine Coast railway line in Queensland, a part of the North Coast line, offers regular interurban passenger services connecting the Sunshine Coast to Brisbane. Operated by Queensland Rail, the 180 km line features both double and single tracks, accommodating various train services including intercity rail and freight trains like the Spirit of Queensland and Tilt Trains.
Dating back to 1890, the Sunshine Coast railway line has a rich history, with electrification for electric multiple units completed in 1988. The line, now served by Citytrain, has seen upgrades and improvements over the years, with the most recent occurring in 2001 to enhance its efficiency and service.
Plans are underway for a new 37 km direct rail connection, the proposed Direct Sunshine Coast Rail Line, aiming to link the Sunshine Coast, Moreton Bay, and Brisbane regions. This new line promises faster, more reliable, and sustainable connections, with trains possibly running at speeds of up to 160 km/h in certain sections. Currently in the planning and business case stages, the new rail line has the potential to significantly enhance public transport options in the area.
