Hinchinbrook state forests

Hinchinbrook Island National Park, located between Townsville and Cairns, is Australia's largest island national park known for its cloud-covered mountains, fragile heath vegetation, lush rainforest, and extensive eucalypt forest. The Thorsborne Trail on the eastern side of the island provides a unique and challenging hiking experience. Notable features include mountains reaching up to 1,000 meters, rainforest, eucalypt forest, diverse mangrove forests, and the seasonal Thorsborne Trail open to experienced bushwalkers.

Visitors to the park can engage in tent camping and hiking activities, with facilities like toilets and challenging summer hiking conditions from October to March. Managed by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS), the park aims to preserve cultural and scenic values while maintaining the natural environment undisturbed. The Bandjin and Girramay people, the Traditional Owners, collaborate with QPWS on park management decisions. Nearby, the Broadwater Abergowrie State Forest offers tropical rainforest, eucalypt forest, and pine plantations for camping and picnicking in the picturesque Herbert River Valley.
