Burnie wildlife centres

The Burnie region in Tasmania is home to two notable wildlife centers: the Little Penguin Observation Centre and Trowunna Wildlife Sanctuary. Located along the foreshore in Burnie, the Little Penguin Observation Centre is just a short distance from the city center. The center offers visitors an intimate view of the Little Fairy Penguins and their seasonal activities, from courtship to chick rearing and molting. Knowledgeable volunteer guides are present at dusk from October 1st to March 31st, regardless of the weather, to provide information about the penguins and help visitors photograph them without flashes. The viewing area is wheelchair accessible and child-friendly.

Trowunna Wildlife Sanctuary is a privately-owned sanctuary situated in the heart of Northern Tasmania, near the world heritage area and the popular tourist attraction of Cradle Mountain. Established in 1979, Trowunna has been at the forefront of Tasmanian wildlife conservation and education. The sanctuary is involved in five separate conservation breeding programs to ensure the survival of native species. Visitors can explore the 70 acres of natural habitat, where kangaroos roam freely, and enjoy daily interactive guided tours that provide an intimate and educational experience for the whole family. Trowunna also offers wildlife interaction experiences and opportunities to become involved with the sanctuary through volunteering, sponsoring an ambassador animal, or making a donation.

Both the Little Penguin Observation Centre and Trowunna Wildlife Sanctuary provide unique and memorable wildlife experiences for visitors to the Burnie region in Tasmania.
