West Tamar zoos

West Tamar, Tasmania, is home to the Tasmania Zoo, which showcases the largest collection of native and exotic wildlife in the state. Located in Riverside, just 18 km from Launceston CBD, the zoo is nestled in the foothills of the Tamar Valley. Tasmania Zoo was first opened in 2003, initially exhibiting birds and a small number of native species. Over the years, it has grown significantly and now features over 100 rare, exotic, and native species. The zoo is dedicated to contributing to wildlife conservation and education while providing world-standard facilities for its residents.

Some of the unique features of Tasmania Zoo include the second-largest collection of primates in any private Australian Zoo and being the only zoo in Tasmania where visitors can meet injured and orphaned wildlife that cannot be returned to the wild. Additionally, the zoo holds membership in the Zoo and Aquarium Association, working closely with all Australasian zoos and participating in various species management programs. The zoo is situated within 900 acres of private natural bushland, offering visitors a peaceful and immersive experience with the animals. The setting provides stunning views of the Great Western Tiers, enhancing the experience for visitors. Tasmania Zoo is a must-visit attraction for animal enthusiasts and families looking for an up-close and personal encounter with a diverse range of species in a natural environment.
